Tour of the exhibition Helen Frankenthaler

January 16, 2025

Once again Palazzo Strozzi is offering viewers something new: the first retrospective devoted to Helen Frankenthaler, another significant personality in the 20th-century art scene. Little known in Italy, she was one of the most significant artists in the United States in the 1950s.

Of Jewish origin, growing up on Manhattan’s Upper East side, she began to take her first steps in the art world in 1950, thanks to the critic Clement Greenberg she decided to perfect her training, enrolling in the same year in Hans Hoffmann’s school. The latter had trained many exponents of the American avant-garde.

The exhibition features the artist’s large canvases, spanning a time span from the 1950s to the early 2000s, testifying to the research and experimentation that characterized his career.

Among the second-generation artists of Abstract Expressionism, her role catalyzed the transition from the latter toward Color Field Painting. Talented, able to go beyond the conventions of traditional art.

A must-see exhibition!
